Tremolo is a musical effect. It approximates trembling. It can be achieved by rapidly alternating notes on analog instruments or by modulating volume on digital instruments. Its musical origin is unknown. It was often considered bad style in European classical music, but can be found, in particular, in musics with shared black and indigenous origins such as in Soul and Cumbia.
In speech the voice often trembles when overflowing with emotion, say just before breaking into tears or on the cusp of thrill. Put differently, tremolo can make our edges disappear.
