(In)visibility

(In)visibility is a term proposed to describe a “surface condition” in visual culture. It emphasises how what is considered “invisible” does not necessarily lie hidden beneath but instead materially manifests on the surface of things. This challenges the visible/invisible binary constructed by dominant Western thought by shifting attention to surfaces—their materiality and depth—rather than focusing on what they hide or reveal. (In)visibility calls for examining the material and conceptual depth of surfaces, offering new ways to engage with them and rethink the meaning of photographic visibility and invisibility.
